Hundertwasser loved to use the spiral as a reoccurring motif throughout his works as a symbol of the creator and destroyer, the expanding and contracting force in the universe. This project from its inception could be seen this way. It started in May of 1950 with the close union of two artist intent on creating a great masterpiece which they did, but the work is evolving overtime into something more and bigger. In time it came to involve the lives of many as a common thread that drew them together in unexpected alliances, Franz Patay the Director of Hundertwassers Museum came to visit the mural in Brooklyn and is now working to insure its restoration and placement in a museum setting. He was photographed in front of the mural and the image was used in the first Austrian news story 4 months ago in Die Kurrier.
It is now in storage in the original 13 pieces awaiting the completion of its restoration by Ralf Wittig, the conservator who works with his museum and archive. I stood on the ladder in front of the united mural 6 years ago when we moved it to save it from destruction in a 10m dollar mansion renovation.
I photoshopped the restoration and cut it into the thirteen parts in order to better visualize the problem of who to put back all the pieces. The Jews have a religious term for this action in the world Tikkun Olam , the restoration of the world. They believe this is done by mitzvahs or good and kind deeds We are looking for partners who want to help in this spirit.
Recently we almost got a grant from a Swiss Bank to restore the mural and pay for a professionally made book and film about the project. Although we were eliminated in the final round we believe that it was good practice and next time we will succeed. They were going to give us $400.000 .
We believe this is a complex puzzle and will require patience
and perseverance to succeed as well as the spirit of collaboration
which it was born in if it is to succeed.
The Director of the Hundertwasser Archive Dr. Andrea Furst, sent this nice calendar and note that expresses the spirit of cooperation and appreciation that are needed to make this project succeed.
